located on the banks of the Karnaphuli River between the Chattogram Hill Tracts and the Bay of Bengal, Chattogram is the second-largest city and financial center in Bangladesh. It is linked by rail and road with Dhaka, Comilla, and Feni (to the northeast) and by air with Dhaka, Cox’s Bazar (to the southwest), and several international destinations, including Kolkata, Muscat, and Dubai.

Chattogram been known by various names, Chattogram been known by various names, including Chatigaon, Chatigam, Chattagrama, Islamabad, Chattala, Chaityabhumi and Porto Grande De Bengala. In 2018, the Bangladesh government decided to change its name Chittagong to Chattogram in order to make the name sound similar to the Bangla spelling.

Chattogram has a high degree of religious and ethnic diversity among Bangladeshi cities, despite having an overwhelming Bengali Muslim majority. Minorities include Bengali Hindus, Bengali Christians, Bengali Buddhists, the Chakmas, the Marmas, the Bohmong, the Rohingyas and Rakhines. This diversity helps the city to be unique and different.

Explore Nature

To explore the nature, head to the Foy's Lake, a man made lake in Chattogram which was created in 1924 by constructing a dam across the stream that came down from the hills in the northern part of Chittagong. The purpose of creating an artificial lake was to provide water to the residents of railway colony. It was named after Mr Foy who was a Railway engineer and believed to materialize the project.

While in Chattogram, don’t forget to visit Patenga Beach! A sandy beach at the meeting place of the roaring sea and the river Karnaphuli. It looks more beautiful from Naval Academy Road which is just beside the Shah Amanat International Airport.

The World War Cemetery

Visit the World War II Cemetery, the well-preserved cemetery at quiet and picturesque place lie buried over 700 soldiers from Commonwealth countries and Japan. The War Cemetery is located in a hillside sloping place, in the south-western corner of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, beside the Badshah Mia Road of the city.

The Culture

Find more about Bangladesh culture with a visit to the Ethnological Museum which shows a mix of tribal artifacts. The Museum was established in the first half of 1960 and contains four galleries and a small hall. It is a little dark. Some sections contain mock-ups of 'village life' for the different tribal areas with life-size dolls.
